The art of Recurseo is the economic soul of Perú

By: Vagarumbero in Lima

Our last article on Gastón Acurio and La Mar Cebicheria in Lima, was well received by our Vagarumberos. Our goal is to become a global destination guide that will share unique experiences and perspectives on worldwide culture, design and entertainment.

The district of Barranco (Spanish for ravine) in Lima is known as the bohemian district of the city. It’s comparable to San Telmo in Buenos Aires, Leblon in Rio de Janeiro or Sacre Couer in Paris. Originally, a fishermen’s coastal area, later turned trendy beach resort for the aristocracy is today home to a handful of Peru’s leading artists, designers, musicians and writers.

Barranco has intensified it’s cultural activity with the opening of the MAC - Lima (Museum of Contemporary Art, Lima) among great restaurants, designer shops and art galleries. One of our favorite findings was Galería Dédalo (Av. Saenz Peña 295).
We found a niche for local artisans that share a common space with a beautiful garden and coffee shop that opens during art exhibitions and music performances that take place throughout the month. Among the most fascinating work was that of studio Recurseo Objetos con objeto. The art of recurseo means to be resourceful; to act effectively or imaginatively, especially in difficult situations. These talented group of artists primarily trained in industrial design make use of reusable and recyclable materials to create unique design solutions that seek to understand emergent form, user ergonomics and sustainability by transforming ideas into functionable and fashionable products.

Among our favorite designs is the Lampara PP-PET by designer Kareen Nishimura Doy. Kareen uses unwanted or unusable plastic bottles and caps, which have been carelessly disposed and transforms them into a colorful display of lights. Designer Ricardo Geldres Piumatti also has a cool design called Banquito Bugui, which is a stoop made of pneumatic tubing and a base made of metallic rod. The artist’s abundant talent is also shared by Alvaro Chang Say Wong, Cecilia Aniya Maesato, Sebastián Bravo Gattinoni, Valerie Doehler Schiller, and Federico Otero.

My experience with new ideas in industrial design that make use of reusable material in Lima were plentiful, I think the art of Recurseo is the economic soul of Perú.
